7 Signs You Might Actually Be Creative

in Creativity, Personal Development for the Obnoxious

I’ve come into contact with many people who I believe have a lot of potential when it comes to being creative, yet they all like to argue with me that they’re not. Being a creative soul myself, as most other creatives may be able to understand, it’s easy to tell in others. There are certain clues for potential, distinctive activities, that one conveys that pokes at me like a little devil on my shoulder saying, “That’s the one, get’em!”

I’ve learned not to press creativity on those that don’t believe they are because it is them who chooses if they are, whether they have the ability or not. What was that saying: if you believe you can or you believe you can’t, you’re right.

As much as I am supportive of developing your potential, it is still your choice to believe you are. But I thought it would be interesting to let you guys know these tell-tale signs that I’ve discovered in others.

Let’s go.

  1. If you can make up excuses why you’re not creative, you might actually be creative. Stop denying it to yourself and just admit it. If you’re able to come up with reasons why you’re not creative in the first place, uh, come on.
  2. If you find yourself thinking way too much on one thing, you might actually be creative. To linger on a thought for more than say, 5 minutes, you may have a problem… or O.C.D. But a lot of artists tend to be very compulsive.
  3. If you’re easily distracted, you might actually be creative. The “Ooh” effect. Something intrigues you or annoys you, in either case this can be seen as heightened awareness and being aware of what’s going on around you helps with inspiration.
  4. If you tend to blurt out thoughts at random, you might actually be creative. The fact that you have these seemingly out of place thoughts is your brain’s ability to capture and process ideas. Something triggered that thought, and association is key when brainstorming.
  5. If someone asks you the same question and you have a different answer every time, you might actually be creative. You see comedians doing this all the time in improv. It’s quite hilarious. Spontaneity is a symptom of creativity.
  6. If you have a twitter account to speak your mind about the crap that goes on in your head, you might actually be creative. If you’re like me, you need a way to flush out the constant barrage of thoughts that accumulate during the day. The fact that it’s easy to collect this psychic ram is a sure sign of creativity.
  7. If you’re extremely picky, you might actually be creative. Being selective means you know what you want. You’ve thought about it. You had to dig for reasons why, or associated reasons why you like things a certain way. Exploring and associating is are processes of creation.

These may seem rather abstract, but by studying how others manifest ideas is what brought me to these conclusions. There are patterns to those who people deem as creative and there are commonalities among artists of all mediums.
